JPS Completes Maintenance Of T’ganu Hydrology Stations Ahead Of Monsoon Season

Kuala terengganu: The Terengganu Drainage and Irrigation Department (JPS) has completed comprehensive maintenance work on the state's network of hydrological telemetry stations in preparation for the Northeast Monsoon (MTL). Its director, Osman Abdullah, stated that this proactive measure aims to ensure all systems monitoring rainfall, river levels, and flood early-warning sirens are in optimal condition and functioning properly.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the maintenance work involved 93 rain stations, 54 river-level stations, 10 webcam stations, and flood early-warning sirens at 11 locations. Abdullah emphasized the importance of ensuring that all equipment at these stations functions well to transmit accurate and real-time data to the main control center. He noted that all stations across the state have been fully serviced, which is crucial for maintaining the accuracy, reliability, and responsiveness of hydrological data to current weather changes.

Abdullah mentioned that the information gathered through the system would assist the National Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre in making forecasts and issuing flood early warnings more effectively during continuous heavy rain. Key maintenance works included the inspection and maintenance of rain and water-level sensors, calibration and testing of the data transmission (telemetry) system, as well as station-area cleaning and minor infrastructure repairs.

He further highlighted that with strengthened technical readiness, the loss of life and property due to flooding can be prevented or minimized. The Malaysian Meteorological Department previously announced that the MTL season was expected to begin yesterday and continue until March next year, with five to seven episodes of heavy rain forecast during the period.
