Kampung Beriah Residents Immune To Floods

BAGAN SERAI, Residents of Kampung Beriah near here admitted that they are immune to floods, having had to deal with the disaster every year,

A Bernama survey of the village today found the compounds of the villagers’ houses inundated, resulting in them having to build a bridge to help them get to the main road.

A resident, 76-year-old Zaini Naam said he expected the area to be hit by flood as it was an annual occurrence during the monsoon transition period for the past 40 years.

He said that whenever the area was flooded, his family would move to the upper level of their home to seek shelter.

“This is our routine every year whenever we are hit by floods. Some residents did not even move their items stored on the upper level to the ground floor of their houses after the previous flood.

“Previously, we would be hit by floods around May and October. But, lately, they have been happening much earlier. We used to be hit by floods up to seven times a year,’ said Zaini.

He said he was one of those who did no
t move to the temporary relief centres due to health reasons, with his physical condition restricting his movement.

Meanwhile, his 71-year-old wife, Halimah Mat Som, said their house was among those affected by the floods as they are located in a low-lying area and due to the stagnant flood waters.

“Although we are immune to the flood situation, which occurs yearly, we still prioritise the safety aspects.

“Perhaps, we will have to deal with the stagnant waters until December. What is important, however, is that we are always on the alert when it comes to safety,’ she said.
