Tambunan:Adeola Fay Robert, a 20-year-old karate exponent from Sabah, has achieved a significant milestone by winning Malaysia's first gold medal at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Her journey, which began as a childhood pastime, has now positioned her at the pinnacle of Asian sports.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Adeola started practicing karate at the age of seven, initially joining her older siblings at their training sessions for fun. Her competitive career began at eight when she won a state-level competition, eventually earning her a silver medal at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA). Her potential was recognized by national coaches, leading to her selection for the national team.
In her debut at the Asian Games, Adeola triumphed over Iran's Fatemehzahra Saeidabadi with a 6-4 victory in the women's under-55kg kumite final. Aside from karate, she has been active in netball and athletics, demonstrating her versatile athletic abilities. She has also collected accolades such as a bronze at the Southeast Asian Karate Federation (SEAKF) Under-21 Championships and another silver at the 2026 SEAKF U21 Championships.
As a full-time athlete with the National Sports Council, Adeola balances her rigorous training schedule with her studies at the Institute of Teacher Education Ilmu Khas Campus in Kuala Lumpur. Her daily routine includes early morning starts, full class schedules, and intense training sessions, which intensified during a six-week centralised program leading up to the Asian Games.
Despite the challenges of balancing her career and personal life, Adeola finds fulfillment in her achievements. She acknowledges the sacrifices involved, including time away from her family in Sabah, but believes her efforts are rewarding. Each competition has contributed to her growth, helping her manage the pressures of international sports.
Adeola remains focused on her future goals, aiming to continue her development both as an athlete and in her career. She aspires to inspire the younger generation, leveraging her experiences to motivate them. Her recent success is not the end of her journey, as she seeks to maintain her momentum and achieve further accomplishments.
