Kuala Lumpur: The High Court here today freed Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor of a sedition charge over his remarks about the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah two years ago.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Judge Datuk Aslam Zainuddin ordered Muhammad Sanusi to be freed following the prosecution's request for a discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA). This came after lawyer Awang Armadajaya Awang Mahmud objected to the DNAA request, arguing that when the prosecution decides not to proceed with charges, it indicates a stop to the case. Therefore, he requested that his client be acquitted and discharged.
Earlier in the proceedings, Deputy Public Prosecutor Datuk Masri Mohd Daud informed the court that the prosecution, after receiving representation from Muhammad Sanusi's lawyer, chose not to pursue the charges and decided to withdraw them. The case had been scheduled for hearing today.
Previously, on December 10 of the previous year, Judge Aslam had acquitted and discharged Muhammad Sanusi of a separate sedition charge related to remarks about the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah. Furthermore, on July 18, 2023, Muhammad Sanusi pleaded not guilty at the Selayang Sessions Court to two sedition charges regarding remarks about the Selangor Menteri Besar's appointment and the formation of a Unity Government during a political speech in Simpang 4, Taman Selayang Mutiara - Kampung Bendahara, Gombak. This case was subsequently transferred to the Shah Alam Court for hearing.
