Kelantan Teenager Utilizes Digital Platform to Promote Traditional Wau Sobek

Kota bharu: A Form Four student from Kampung Sering, Kedai Lalat, Muhammad Dani Danial Muhd Azeimi, 16, has tapped into the Niaga Anak Digital Kelantan (NADI) platform to market wau sobek, a traditional kite he has been crafting with his father since childhood. The teenager is continuing a proud family tradition, guided by his father, Muhd Azeimi Mohd Noor, 46, who is affectionately known as 'Mie Wau Sering'.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Muhammad Dani had his traditional kites like wau bulan, jala budi, puyuh, kucing, and wau merak on display at the NADI entrepreneurship booth during the MADANI Rakyat Programme 2025. He also conducts wau-making demonstrations and sells framed wau as souvenirs to visitors. Some of his father's creations have even attracted interest from abroad.

The kites on display are priced between RM35 and RM2,000, depending on their size, the materials used, and the artistic value of the sobek patterns. Muhammad Dani said he often accompanied his father to various exhibitions and demonstrations before actively crafting his own wau and joining NADI earlier this year. He expressed that this initiative was his starting point to earn his own income using simple materials like colored paper, bamboo, and glue, requiring creativity and patience due to the delicate art of wau sobek.

Muhammad Dani, the third of four siblings, noted that visitors, including tourists from outside Kelantan, showed interest in his family's crafts, especially those made by his brother, Muhammad Faiz Danial, 19, known for their unique designs and artistic value.

Meanwhile, wau art enthusiast Safiuddin Ahmad Saudi, a civil servant from Kota Bharu, attended PMR 2025 to witness the intricate sobek art on traditional kites. He shared his admiration for the skill required to craft these delicate and artistic wau sobek, recalling his own challenging experience in making a wau during a programme in Bachok.

The three-day Kelantan PMR 2025, which runs until tomorrow, is led by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) in collaboration with the Implementation Coordination Unit, Prime Minister's Department (ICU JPM), and supported by various other ministries and government agencies. The programme offers over 100 services to the public, showcases the latest technology, and presents various initiatives to engage with the community through the comprehensive MADANI Government approach.
