KKR Implements Solar Energy Projects in Government Buildings to Boost Renewable Energy Use

Kuala Lumpur: The Works Ministry (KKR) has launched a significant initiative to install 11 grid-connected solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in government buildings, aiming to bolster the government's renewable energy policy. Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi highlighted that five of these projects, initiated last year, have reached completion, while the remaining ones are either under construction or in the pre-procurement stage.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the completed projects include installations at the Parliament Building, Institut Latihan Keselamatan Perlindungan Malaysia (ILKEM), the Selangor Public Works Department (JKR), Wisma Pertahanan Malaysia, and the Home Ministry Complex. The initiative not only promotes renewable energy usage but also contributes to substantial electricity savings, with the Parliament building alone witnessing monthly savings of up to RM100,000.

The project primarily involves installing solar PV systems on rooftops and in car parks. This was announced by Minister Nanta during a press conference following the handover ceremony of three completed projects at Wisma Pertahanan Malaysia, the Home Ministry Complex, and the Selangor JKR.

Minister Nanta further elaborated that four ongoing projects encompass 20 government buildings, including 15 Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) camp buildings, four police headquarters, and the Sultan Azlan Shah Ministry of Health Training Institute (ILKKM) in Ipoh, Perak. Meanwhile, two additional projects are in the pre-procurement phase, targeting seven JKR buildings and the Sustainable Energy Development Authority (SEDA) office in Cyberjaya.

The ministry aims to complete the four projects currently under construction by the end of this year, while the two projects in the pre-procurement stage are expected to be finalized by January 2026.
