Kuala lumpur: The Malaysian Football League (MFL) has granted special approval to Kuala Lumpur City FC (KL City) to register a minimum of 12 players for the 2026-2027 Super League match against Kuching City FC at the Kuala Lumpur Football Stadium in Cheras, tonight.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision was approved by the MFL Board of Directors after receiving an official request from KL City regarding their player registration status, following the resolution process of several arrears cases involving former players which resulted in the club facing a player registration ban from the International Federation of Association Football (FIFA).
Based on KL City's official letter dated today, the club informed that it has settled outstanding payments to three former import players, though the 2021 Malaysia Cup champions are still awaiting FIFA's approval process to lift the ban.
"Should the Player Transfer Ban Order remain in place prior to tonight's match kickoff, Kuala Lumpur City FC requests Special Approval to register a minimum of 12 players. In this regard, the MFL Board of Directors has agreed to the request and granted Special Approval to Kuala Lumpur City FC," according to an MFL statement today.
Meanwhile, MFL reminded KL City to take appropriate action to complete the player registration process and ensure the player list is fulfilled before the closing date of the first registration window of the 2026-2027 Malaysia League on September 3.
Yesterday, KL City was fined RM50,000, and Negeri Sembilan FC was awarded a 3-0 victory and three points after MFL found that The City Boys failed to manage player registration matters early enough, rendering them unable to field a complete team for their opening league match in Paroi last Saturday.
An MFL check via the MyPAS system at the time revealed that KL City only had 12 registered players, consisting of 11 outfield players and one goalkeeper, whereas Super League clubs are required to register at least 20 players including three goalkeepers before the first match.
MFL also rejected KL City's request to postpone the match against Kuching City and warned that failing to play tonight could result in Kuching City being awarded a 3-0 walkover victory and KL City facing an additional RM50,000 fine.
