Kuala Lumpur:KPJ Healthcare Bhd has set a new Southeast Asian record following the successful completion of 35 robot-assisted minimally invasive cardiac surgeries (MICS) at Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (DSH2) within a span of 90 days.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, DSH2 is recognized as the first hospital in the Klang Valley, encompassing both public and private healthcare sectors, to have performed robot-assisted MICS. This milestone was achieved under the leadership of cardiothoracic surgeon Prof Dr Shahrul Amry Hashim, supported by a multidisciplinary team of specialists.
Robot-assisted MICS differs from traditional open-heart surgery by utilizing small incisions between the ribs instead of splitting the breastbone. KPJ Healthcare highlighted that the da Vinci Xi Robotic Surgical System enhances surgical precision through magnified three-dimensional visualization and improved instrument control, while the surgeon remains fully responsible for the procedure.
The approach aims to reduce surgical trauma and post-operative discomfort, potentially allowing for earlier patient mobilization and shorter hospital stays. However, it is not suitable for all patients, with decisions based on individual clinical assessments.
KPJ Healthcare Leadership Officer Prof Datuk Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid emphasized the importance of clinical expertise, multidisciplinary support, and advanced technology in achieving this feat. He noted that maintaining high standards of care and sound medical judgment is crucial as the group continues to develop its capabilities.
Dr Shahrul Amry remarked on the significance of completing 35 procedures in 90 days, but stressed that the focus remains on providing comprehensive care from assessment through recovery for each patient. This accomplishment aligns with KPJ Healthcare's strategy of integrating clinical practice with education, research, and innovation.
Previously, DSH2 was honored with the Minimally Invasive Cardiac Surgery of the Year Asia Pacific 2025 award, reflecting its expertise in the field. KPJ Healthcare operates 29 hospitals and three ambulatory care centers across Malaysia, catering to over 3.3 million patients annually with the support of 1,491 medical consultants.
