KPJ Healthcare Implements AI for Enhanced Colorectal Cancer Screening

Johor Bahru:KPJ Healthcare Berhad has launched AI-assisted colonoscopy at Johor Specialist Hospital to improve early detection of colorectal cancer. This marks the first use within KPJ Healthcare's network of the ENAD system, developed by Ainex Corporation, which works with existing Olympus equipment to analyze images in real time.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the ENAD system uses Computer-Aided Detection and Diagnosis technologies to help specialists identify and assess potential colorectal lesions, including those that are small or flat. This is crucial because some polyps can develop into cancer over time.

KPJ Healthcare's Prof Datuk Dr Hanafiah Harunarashid emphasized the importance of using AI to support clinical decisions and improve patient care quality. The priority is to responsibly apply AI to meet specific clinical needs while maintaining patient care standards.

Dr Abraham Mathew George from JSH noted that ENAD provides additional visual information, aiding specialists in examining areas that require closer attention. He stressed that AI supports, rather than replaces, the expertise of endoscopists.

The Health Ministry's plan highlights colorectal cancer as Malaysia's second most common cancer, with most cases diagnosed at advanced stages. The ENAD deployment aligns with KPJ Healthcare's strategy to integrate clinical practice, education, and research to enhance patient care.
