KPKT Aims to Establish 18 Waste-to-Energy Facilities by 2050

Kuala lumpur: The Housing and Local Government Ministry (KPKT) is targeting the development of 18 waste-to-energy (WTE) plants across Peninsular Malaysia by 2050 in support of the nation's renewable energy goals. Minister Nga Kor Ming announced that the WTE facility in Port Dickson, Negeri Sembilan has been operational since 2023, with another facility in Sungai Udang, Melaka, slated for completion by 2029.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, this initiative could generate up to 600 megawatts of renewable energy, providing power to 500,000 households and supporting Malaysia's target of achieving 70 percent renewable energy capacity by 2050. Nga highlighted that 20 percent of vehicles used in solid waste management are projected to be electric by 2027, aligning with public cleaning system reforms and sustainable urban development goals.

Nga emphasized Malaysia's commitment to advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as the nation chairs ASEAN and the UN-Habitat Assembly. The integration of electric vehicles (EVs) in waste management, including compactors, street sweepers, water sprayers, and mini sweepers, not only aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions but also to lower long-term operating costs.
