Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Housing and Local Government (KPKT) has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative to eliminate sick and abandoned housing projects in Malaysia by 2030. This strategic move is part of the MADANI Housing Reform and other initiatives aimed at bolstering homebuyer protection.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Minister Nga Kor Ming detailed several reforms aimed at achieving this goal. These include enhancements to the Housing Integrated Management System (HIMS), the introduction of an Electronic Sale and Purchase Agreement (eSPA), improvements to the Housing Development Account (HDA), and the proposed implementation of the Option to Purchase (OTP) mechanism. During a media conference at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (MITEC), Nga emphasized the ministry's vision of a future without abandoned housing projects.
The KPKT special task force has already made significant progress, reviving 1,647 sick and abandoned projects nationwide, boasting a gross development value exceeding RM150 billion. In conjunction with the ASEAN Real Estate Conference (AREC) 2026 and ARCHIDEX 2026, a collaboration between KPKT and the Real Estate and Housing Developers' Association Malaysia (REHDA) offers visitors a 10 percent discount on selected home purchases, enhancing home affordability.
ARCHIDEX 2026 stands as the largest exhibition of its kind in Malaysia, featuring 860 exhibitors over 39,000 square meters. It reinforces Malaysia's status as a regional hub for the built environment and urban development industry. Nga highlighted Malaysia's progress in sustainable development, with about 500 million square feet of green buildings. KPKT's collaboration with the University of Cambridge aims to establish a globally recognized Green Index Building standard.
Future People's Residency Programme (PRR) projects will incorporate renewable energy, rainwater harvesting, and other green features, aligning with sustainable development goals. On flood mitigation, the ministry has reduced flood hotspots by 10 percent, with 128 locations now flood-free.
In his speech, Nga noted Malaysia's success under the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), with over 511,000 affordable housing units approved, contributing to a homeownership rate of about 77 percent. Looking forward, the 13MP will emphasize transit-oriented development (TOD) principles in public housing projects, improving access to public transport and essential amenities.
