KPN Sets Nation-Building as Main Focus to Strengthen National Unity

Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of National Unity (KPN) has set nation-building as its main objective for next year to strengthen national unity through the formation of a shared national identity. Its minister, Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang, emphasized that this focus was determined after evaluating previous unity programmes, which did not achieve the desired level of impact.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Aaron highlighted that while various activities centered on harmony and diversity have been organized to achieve unity, the ministry aims to further strengthen these efforts. He stated that nation-building forms the foundation of national stability and that accepting the concept of a nation-state will lead to a united country with a unique Malaysian identity.

Aaron elaborated that nation-building is a long-term project requiring grassroots involvement, particularly through the education system. He stressed the importance of language, clothing, values, and historical understanding in forming a national identity, emphasizing the need for Malaysian youth, especially Generation Z, to be continuously exposed to patriotism through structured educational programmes.

Initiatives such as the Gerak Integrasi Perpaduan (GRIP) programme at the school level, cross-cultural student programmes across Peninsular Malaysia, Sabah, and Sarawak, and volunteerism and leadership programmes at universities have been implemented to support this goal.

Meanwhile, Home Ministry deputy secretary-general (Policy and Strategic Planning) Mohammad Sobri Mat Daud announced that the Unity Sports League will be reorganized next year in collaboration with the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS). Initial discussions with the KBS have been held to revitalize unity efforts at the grassroots level through inclusive participation across different races.

Mohammad Sobri indicated that plans are underway to start at the community level, with winners progressing to state and national levels, aiming to engage younger generations and various races. The league seeks to reintroduce traditional folk sports, with sepak takraw among the new sports considered, alongside existing sports like badminton, netball, and basketball.
