Kuala lumpur: The Ministry of Women, Family, and Community Development (KPWKM) is currently examining existing legislation to improve safeguards for children against sexual crimes, with a particular focus on social media and online platforms. Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri, the minister of KPWKM, emphasized that the ministry is conducting engagement sessions and discussions with various stakeholders, including authorities, non-governmental organizations, and local communities, especially parents, to enhance child protection mechanisms.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, this initiative is being intensified to address the challenges posed by technological advancements and digital developments, specifically in tackling paedophilia from its earliest stages. Nancy highlighted the necessity for several detailed proposals to be presented before any improvements or amendments to relevant acts, such as the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, are tabled by the government to ensure comprehensive protection.
Nancy stated the importance of these laws being inclusive, not merely confined to police investigations, but involving all parties, particularly communities in each state. She assured that any opinions or proposals put forward will be considered. Additionally, she noted that the engagement sessions have been positively received, particularly by parents, indicating an increase in public awareness despite the rising statistics of sexual crimes against children.
