Kuala Lumpur:The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development (KPWKM) highlights four essential strategies in tackling domestic violence prevention, protection, intervention, and rehabilitation.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Minister Lim Hui Ying emphasized the importance of these strategies in providing victims with proper protection and support, both during and after their experiences with abuse. She explained that strengthening family institutions through preventive programs is a priority, followed by protection when incidents occur. Intervention measures and rehabilitation are also crucial components, ensuring victims can rebuild their lives and gain independence.
Legal protection for victims includes three types of orders the Emergency Protection Order (EPO), which the Social Welfare Department (JKM) can issue without a police report; and the Interim Protection Order (IPO) and Protection Order (PO), both requiring a police report and issued by courts.
Lim stressed that domestic violence should not be used to resolve family conflicts, advocating for communication, mutual respect, and open discussion instead. She urged victims facing violence or threats to seek help promptly.
KPWKM collaborates with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM), various government agencies, NGOs, and the community through a committee focused on data collection, education, capacity building, and protection efforts. Lim noted that families and neighbors must also contribute by recognizing domestic violence as a crime and reporting it.
The Talian Kasih 15999 hotline operates 24/7, providing the public with a means to report incidents and receive advice and psychosocial counseling. Complaints are directed to the Social Welfare Department for further action.
