Kuala Lumpur: The Kuala Nerus Coastal Erosion Control project is on track for completion in January 2027, as announced by Energy Transition and Water Transformation Ministry (PETRA) secretary-general Datuk Mad Zaidi Mohd Karli. The project, initiated in July 2023 with a federal development allocation of RM90 million, has reached 24.5 percent progress.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the project encompasses beach nourishment operations along a two-kilometer stretch and involves the construction of 16 breakwaters to restore the coastline from Pantai Mengabang Telipot to Pantai Batu Rakit. The initiative aims to preserve the shoreline, prevent coastal flooding, and protect local property and infrastructure. This effort is also expected to enhance tourism activities, thereby supporting local economic growth.
Mad Zaidi highlighted that the MyProjek system's records as of May 19 show the federal government has approved 27 projects, with 22 focused on water resources, flood mitigation, and coastal erosion, managed by the Department of Irrigation and Drainage. Additionally, three water supply projects under the Water Supply Department and two projects under the Sewerage Services Department (JPP) have been sanctioned under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12th Malaysia Plan (12MP), amounting to RM2.945 billion.
For Terengganu, RM287.8 million has been allocated under the Fifth Rolling Plan of the 12MP. Furthermore, 24 new projects proposed under the 13MP for 2026 are currently under budget review by the Economy Ministry. Earlier, Mad Zaidi assessed the coastal erosion project during the ministry's two-day outreach program in Kelantan and Terengganu, executed by the Eastern Zone PETRA Squad.
