Late Tan Sri Tiong’s Lasting Impact on Society and Education Commemorated

Sibu: The late Tan Sri Tiong Hiew King's enduring contributions to society, education, and the nation were highlighted by Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing, who described him as a dedicated leader committed to community development and education initiatives.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, during a gathering to pay his last respects, Tiong King Sing emphasized the late media tycoon's support for education, particularly for independent, Chinese, and religious schools. He expressed hope that the younger generation would draw inspiration from Tiong's legacy. The minister lamented the loss of a great leader, noting that it was a significant loss not only for Sibu but for the entire nation.

Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) senior vice-president Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh also remembered Tiong as a visionary businessman and philanthropist, with a strong legacy in the media industry. Tiong owned several influential newspapers, including Sin Chew Daily and Kwong Wah Yit Poh, and had publications in Cambodia, Papua New Guinea, and France. Wong reflected on Tiong's journey from a humble village background to building a vast conglomerate spanning industries like palm oil, timber, shipping, construction, and media. He regarded Tiong's passing as a loss for Sarawak, Malaysia, and the world.

Wong also shared personal memories of Tiong, highlighting their shared love of reading. Tiong regularly sent him books and complimentary copies of Asia Week for over three decades, demonstrating his thoughtfulness even as his health declined.

The late Tiong, who founded the Rimbunan Hijau Group and was known for his extensive business empire and philanthropic efforts, passed away at the age of 90. His encoffin will take place at his residence, followed by a funeral service at Xin Fu Yuan Methodist Church. He will then be laid to rest at Tiong's Memorial Park.
