Lawmakers Focus on Healthcare Workers’ Protection and Welfare During Budget 2027 Debate

Baku:The protection and welfare of healthcare workers, along with students' mental health, were key topics during the policy-stage debate on the Supply Bill (Budget) 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Datuk Willie Mongin (GPS-Puncak Borneo) suggested the government establish a protection scheme for high-risk duties, highlighting this need after a Flying Doctor Service (FDS) helicopter crash in Long Lellang, Ulu Baram, Sarawak, which resulted in five fatalities. The incident underscored disparities in the protection provided to victims' families based on their employment status, despite all being on the same mission.

Willie Mongin proposed a protection scheme based on three principles automatic coverage for individuals assigned official high-risk duties, comprehensive coverage for various missions, and additional protection without affecting existing entitlements like pensions and insurance. He also emphasized that FDS service contracts should consider factors such as safety and operator capabilities over price alone.

Abdul Latiff Abdul Rahman (PN-Kuala Krai) supported the proposal, insisting that protection should extend to all high-risk assignments. He advocated for a broader application of increased allowances and suggested providing takaful coverage for healthcare personnel in high-risk areas to ensure their welfare.

Oscar Ling Chai Yew (PH-Sibu) called for the Malaysian Medical Council (MMC) to expand recognition of medical qualifications, including those from overseas, to address workforce shortages. He cited Chinese medical programs as potential options and noted that some institutions are already recognized by the MMC.

Datuk Shahelmy Yahya (BN-Putatan) urged the Health Ministry to investigate why many medical officers failed to report for duty in Sabah and suggested improvements in facilities and incentives to make the state a more attractive posting.

Datuk Mas Ermieyati Samsudin (PN-Masjid Tanah) highlighted the importance of data sharing between the Education Ministry and MOH to enhance mental health interventions for students. She also called for the reinstatement of community clinics to improve access to healthcare services and reduce overcrowding at public clinics.

The Dewan Rakyat sitting will continue tomorrow.
