Lee Lam Thye Receives Honorary PhD From OUM


Alliance For A Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye has been conferred an honorary Doctor of Philosophy in Education degree by the Open University Malaysia (OUM).

Lee received the honorary doctorate from OUM pro-chancellor Tan Sri Azman Hashim at the university’s 38th convocation ceremony at the World Trade Centre here today.

Lee said this is the seventh honorary doctorate he received from Malaysian public and private universities over the years for his contributions to the nation, focusing on national unity, safety and health, environmental social governance and community welfare.

In his acceptance speech at the convocation, he paid tribute to OUM for pioneering open and distance learning over 24 years ago, thus creating opportunities for individuals to balance work and study seamlessly.

He said this initiative has empowered countless Malaysians to pursue their academic goals without sacrificing their professional aspirations.

On the award, he hoped it would serve as a beacon of inspiration, enc
ouraging all to engage with society and contribute to its betterment.

‘Together we can create a brighter future through service, compassion and commitment to excellence,’ he said in a statement made available to Bernama today.

Born in 1946 in Ipoh, Lee entered politics and served as a Selangor state assemblyman and later Member of Parliament for over 20 years until his retirement in 1990.

Lee has also received several other awards, including Outstanding Young Malaysian Award (1986) from Jaycees Malaysia, Rotary Paul Harris Fellowship Award (1996), Occupational Safety and Health Excellence Award (2005), and Tokoh Maulidur Rasul Award (2019).
