Level One Hot Weather Poses Health Risks for Vulnerable Groups in Kelantan

Kelantan: Exposure to level one hot weather for extended durations can be harmful to health, particularly for vulnerable groups including children, pregnant women, the elderly, and individuals with chronic conditions. Kelantan state health director, Datuk Dr Mohd Azman Yacob, highlighted these concerns as the region continues to experience high temperatures.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, since early March, Kelantan has been enduring level one hot weather, prompting health officials to advise residents to minimize outdoor activities during peak hours from 11 am to 4 pm. Dr Mohd Azman noted that four districts-Kuala Krai, Pasir Mas, Tanah Merah, and Machang-have recorded precautionary level one hot weather status with temperatures between 35 to 37 degrees Celsius for three consecutive days. While no heat-related illnesses have been reported, Dr Mohd Azman urged the public to seek immediate medical attention if they exhibit symptoms linked to hot weather exposure.

Speaking at the Opening Ceremony of the Cakna Ubat Mabrur Haji Programme, officiated by Health deputy director-general (pharmaceutical services) Dr Azuana Ramli, Dr Mohd Azman listed symptoms associated with extreme heat. These include headaches, fatigue, dizziness, and nausea, which can escalate to dehydration, confusion, and in severe cases, heat stroke.

For those planning outdoor activities or holidays during the hot weather, Dr Mohd Azman advised preventive measures such as avoiding peak hours, staying hydrated, wearing loose clothing, and using personal protective equipment like umbrellas or hats. He also recommended fieldwork be conducted early in the morning and concluded by 11 am, and suggested that schools postpone outdoor activities for students.

Commenting on the Cakna Ubat Mabrur Haji Programme, Dr Mohd Azman emphasized the evolving role of pharmacy services from mere dispensary tasks to agents of education, prevention, and community well-being. He expressed hope that the initiative, which aims to enhance the health and medication compliance of pilgrims in the Holy Land, could serve as a model for national expansion.
