Limiting Chief Minister’s Tenure to 2 Terms Among GRS Manifesto: Armizan

Kota kinabalu: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) is committed to limiting the Chief Minister's tenure in office to two consecutive terms as one of the key reforms in the party's manifesto for the upcoming Sabah state election. GRS deputy secretary-general Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali stated that this proposal was approved in the Sabah Cabinet Meeting in December 2023 and is currently in the drafting phase for a Bill. According to BERNAMA News Agency, Armizan explained that implementing this reform requires an amendment to the State Constitution. This amendment necessitates the approval of two-thirds of the assembly members, meaning GRS needs a landslide victory exceeding a two-thirds majority in the upcoming state election to achieve this goal. Armizan emphasized the importance of limiting the term of office to ensure leadership renewal and prevent prolonged concentration of power. He mentioned that GRS considers this initiative among the most progressive political reforms in Sabah, and the party had previously voiced its commitment to this reform ahead of the state election. The GRS manifesto is structured around four main thrusts: Sabah First, Sabah Forward, Sabah Prosper, and Sabah United. These reflect the coalition's dedication to enhancing state development, ensuring the well-being of the populace, and strengthening governance with integrity. Armizan noted that these thrusts were agreed upon during the first meeting of the special manifesto preparation team, chaired by him and comprising members from the eight GRS component parties.
