LKIM Seeks Increased Budget Allocation for Fisheries Sector Enhancement

Telok Mas:The Malaysian Fisheries Development Authority (LKIM) has requested a higher allocation under Budget 2027 to enhance the capabilities of fishermen and strengthen the national fisheries sector.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, LKIM Chairman Muhammad Faiz Fadzil stated that the authority received RM140 million in allocations this year and is hopeful for an increase in the upcoming budget. The focus areas for the requested budget include aquaculture expansion, infrastructure development like jetties and artificial reefs, housing for fishermen, and the continuation of existing incentives such as cost-of-living allowances, fish landing incentives, and fuel subsidies. The exact amount requested remains undisclosed as the process is ongoing and contingent on government approval.

Muhammad Faiz also mentioned LKIM's plans to evaluate a breakwater project in Telok Mas to further improve the infrastructure for local fishermen. He has directed the engineering team from LKIM headquarters to assess the project's feasibility and the necessary funding.

Previously, LKIM constructed a jetty in Telok Mas at a cost of RM800,000 last year. Additionally, a fishermen's shed, costing RM400,000, is slated for construction this year to enhance local facilities. There are 50 active fishermen in the area who benefit from government fuel subsidies as part of the assistance provided.

To boost fish catches in Melaka, LKIM aims to increase aquaculture capacity and implement artificial reef projects, creating more fish breeding grounds in state waters. The authority has land earmarked for an aquaculture project in Sebatu, Jasin, and has already deployed artificial reefs in the Sebatu area, including Telok Mas, last year.

The engagement session at the Tanjong Nibong Fishermen's Jetty facilitated dialogue between LKIM and the local fishing community, allowing fishermen to voice current concerns, technical issues, and propose improvements. Additionally, around 60 fishermen from the B40 category received food kits at the event to alleviate their financial burden.
