Chennah: Incumbent Chennah assemblyman Anthony Loke said he is prepared to face any challenger seeking to contest the seat in the 16th Negeri Sembilan state election. Loke, who is also DAP secretary-general, emphasized the openness of the country's democratic system, allowing anyone to offer themselves as a candidate.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Loke described electoral contests as a cornerstone of democracy. "We are a democratic country. Anyone who wants to stand as a candidate is welcome to do so. It is their right," he told reporters after officiating the Negeri Sembilan-level MyLesen B2 programme. He was responding to reports about businessman Albert Tei considering contesting the Chennah state seat after receiving a political party's offer.
However, Loke stressed the importance of meeting eligibility requirements for those intending to contest a state seat, including updating their registered address to the constituency they wish to represent. His current focus remains on fulfilling his duties and responsibilities as the elected representative for Chennah, rather than on potential political opponents.
Loke reiterated that the mandate given to him by voters over the past three terms is his top priority. He aims to concentrate on serving his constituents rather than speculating about potential challengers in the upcoming state election. The Election Commission (EC) has scheduled July 18 as nomination day for the Negeri Sembilan state election, with polling set for August 1 and early voting on July 28.
