Long lellang: The dream of nurse Jessie Paya Jok, 44, to further her studies was cut short when she was killed in the flying doctor service (FDS) helicopter crash in Long Lellang last Tuesday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, her close friend, Caroline Sawai Joseph Chungat, 43, a nurse at Miri Hospital, shared that Jessie, or more fondly known as Paya, had told her that this month would be her last assignment with the FDS. Paya had been planning to pursue an Advanced Diploma in Midwifery next year. Caroline recounted their last conversation, where Paya expressed excitement about her future academic plans. Unfortunately, Paya's aspirations were tragically unfulfilled.

Caroline had known Paya since 2005, when they were both community nurse trainees at the Ministry of Health Malaysia Training Institute (ILKKM) in Serian. During their 21-year friendship, Paya was known for her gentle and soft-spoken demeanor. Caroline described Paya as someone who never lost her temper and always brought joy with her smiles and laughter.

Paya's dedication to her profession was evident during her service at Bario Health Clinic, where she was beloved by the community. Caroline highlighted Paya's compassion, noting her willingness to personally cover travel expenses for patients needing referrals to Miri Hospital.

In addition to Paya, Caroline also mourned the loss of another nurse, Debra Moset, 40, who was known for her friendly and approachable nature. Caroline's friendship with Debra began at Jambatan Suai Health Clinic, where Debra was admired for her meticulous and caring approach to her duties.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) reported that the BO-105 helicopter, carrying five people including the pilot, crashed near the Long Lellang Short Take-Off and Landing Airport (STOLport). The crash claimed the lives of Jessie, Debra, pilot Captain Zainol Afiq Bee Sham, 30, medical officer Dr Ainul Baraah Kamaruddin, 33, and medical assistant Alexson Adit Henry, 31.
