Long-term Assistance Planned for Pantai Dalam Fire Victims, Says Fahmi Fadzil

Pantai dalam: The form of long-term assistance for victims affected by the fire that destroyed 14 houses and several business premises in Pantai Dalam last night will be studied first before a coordinated plan is implemented. Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil stated that his ministry is arranging multiple meetings involving the affected families and the Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) to determine the best way forward.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Fahmi emphasized the need to engage with the affected families to explore support options beyond financial aid and emergency relief. He is considering relocating the families to nearby People's Housing Projects (PPR) to ensure access to suitable housing during the reconstruction period or if they require new homes. For affected shops and business premises, meetings will be held with DBKL, landlords, shop operators, and other relevant parties to discuss future steps.

Fahmi, who also serves as the Lembah Pantai Member of Parliament, shared that feedback from the Fire and Rescue Department indicates the existing structure of the damaged premises is beyond repair and may need demolition. He noted the extensive damage to structures made mostly of wood, highlighting safety hazards that necessitate demolition and new construction. The ministry will explore assistance options to support the area's redevelopment.

During his visit to the Al-Khwarizmi Religious Primary School, now a relief center for the 66 victims from 17 families, Fahmi spent nearly an hour inspecting the fire site. The fire, which started around 11 pm yesterday, destroyed 14 squatter houses and four shop premises, including Mydin Mart and Pasaraya Karnival. The Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department reported that about 80 percent of the residential area, covering approximately 0.074 hectares, and 0.223 hectares of shop premises were destroyed.
