Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has been reaffirmed as a crucial component of the government's strategy to uphold a governance system free from corruption. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim emphasized the significance of the MACC's role in maintaining integrity within the government, stressing that his administration would not tolerate corruption.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has granted the MACC full authority to operate without fear or favor, targeting individuals involved in corrupt practices. He stated that unchecked procurement processes must be eradicated and that the MACC should have the autonomy to investigate and take necessary actions against corruption.
Anwar expressed his gratitude for the MACC's commitment to tackling corruption, acknowledging the deep-rooted nature of the issue in Malaysia, which he noted has almost become cultural. He made these remarks at the MACC Ceremonial Dinner 2025 held at the World Trade Centre (WTC) in Kuala Lumpur, attended by key figures including MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.
Reflecting on his past experiences with the MACC, formerly known as the Anti-Corruption Agency (ACA), Anwar acknowledged the challenges in eradicating corruption, which sometimes stem from systemic and political incompatibilities. During his tenure in the previous government, he prioritized strengthening the ACA through legal amendments, increasing manpower, and providing financial resources.
Anwar recounted a government initiative to send a team to Hong Kong, a country once notorious for corruption in the 60s and 70s, to learn from their successful anti-corruption strategies. He highlighted the establishment of the Hong Kong Anti-Corruption Commission, which was empowered by strong legal frameworks and resources, leading to a significant transformation within eight years.
The Prime Minister reiterated his commitment to fighting corruption, assuring that as long as he remains in office, he will not relent in efforts to rid the country of corrupt practices and power abuses.
