Serdang: The value of Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) signed in conjunction with the Malaysia Agriculture, Horticulture and Agro-Tourism Exhibition (MAHA) has reached RM9.3 billion, exceeding the initial target of RM8 billion. Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu shared the news amidst an overwhelming public response, with visitor numbers reaching 2.77 million by the seventh day and sales climbing to RM16.3 million.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad Sabu stated, "We targeted RM8 billion, but as of today we have achieved RM9.3 billion. Visitors up to the seventh day totalled 2.77 million and the number of vehicles was more than 555,000," during a media briefing at the Agro Quest Reality Programme Winners' Prize Presentation Ceremony at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (MAEPS).
China remains a key agricultural trading partner, contributing to the MoU total with agreements valued at RM3.27 billion through renewed and expanded agri-food product imports. The MoUs, described as a commitment to future business agreements, are expected to boost exports such as pineapples and advanced tech applications in agriculture.
Significant collaborations include an MoU between the National Farmers' Organisation (NAFAS), Guizhou Phosphate Chemical Group, and Jiangsu Chemical Design Institute Co Ltd, valued at RM1.5 billion. Mohamad Sabu emphasized that while MoUs are not final agreements, they pave the way for tangible trade and agreements, exemplified by the immediate continuation of activities like pineapple exports post-MoU signing.
Mohamad Sabu also highlighted the involvement of the younger generation in agriculture, using modern technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT), saying, "Earlier we saw young people who were so enthusiastic, successful in their involvement in agriculture and using impressive new technologies."
He encouraged Klang Valley residents to visit MAHA during its closing days to obtain planting seeds and explore advancements in local food technology.
