MAIWP Homeless Outreach Programme Aids KL Transit Centre and Asnaf

Kuala lumpur: The Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) continues its commitment to supporting urban asnaf and homeless individuals in the capital through the MAIWP Homeless Outreach Programme Series 3/2026. The initiative aims to ensure effective distribution of zakat and corporate wakalah funds.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the programme, in collaboration with the National Welfare Foundation (YKN), NexG Berhad, and individual wakalah contributors, provided RM21,000 worth of assistance to the Kuala Lumpur Homeless Transit Centre (PTGKL) and asnaf around Pudu Raya. MAIWP chairman Datuk Syed Kamarulzaman Syed Kabeer highlighted that NexG Berhad contributed furniture and basic necessities valued at RM18,000 to improve the living conditions at PTGKL.

Additionally, two individual wakalah contributors, Wan Ahmad Sanusi Mahmood and Zulkefli Mohd Johan, provided essential items worth RM3,000 to 30 asnaf and homeless individuals in Pudu Raya. Syed Kamarulzaman emphasized the importance of integrated cooperation among government agencies, religious institutions, welfare organizations, the corporate sector, wakalah contributors, and the community in addressing homelessness and urban poverty.

He noted that the programme's value lies not just in monetary contributions but in the comfort, relief, and hope it provides to recipients. Meanwhile, YKN chief executive officer Nordina Haron stated that PTGKL, managed by YKN since 2016, currently accommodates about 70 residents, although it can house up to 200 people. Since its inception, PTGKL has assisted over 5,000 individuals by offering temporary accommodation and basic support.

A resident named Bob, 39, shared his experience, stating that the temporary shelter was crucial after his burger business declined due to rising raw material costs. The agency's efforts in connecting residents with potential employers were instrumental in his transition to a new job in Shah Alam, Selangor.
