Malaysia: Malaysia is confident it can achieve its aspiration of becoming a Reading Nation by 2030 through continuous efforts and support from all parties, said Minister of National Unity Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang. In conjunction with today's World Book and Copyright Day, he emphasised the three main commitments of the MADANI government in its efforts to achieve the aspiration.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, these commitments include empowering rural and community libraries as knowledge hubs, social interaction, and local community development. Additionally, there is a focus on accelerating the digitalisation of libraries in line with technological developments and the needs of the current generation.
Aaron highlighted the importance of strengthening the country's book and publishing industry, which includes supporting the ecosystem of writing, publishing, and distribution of quality reading materials. He expressed these commitments in a Facebook post, reflecting the government's dedication to fostering a robust reading culture.
He further stated that the National Library of Malaysia (PNM), an agency under the Ministry of National Unity, is the lead agency in efforts to promote a reading culture in the country. Quoting Plato, Aaron remarked, "Books give a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything," underscoring the transformative power of reading in society.
