Kuala lumpur: Malaysia and Indonesia have agreed to enhance their cooperation in the tourism sector by developing multi-segment products, which include cultural experiences, educational exchanges, and health and wellness tourism. Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing announced the agreement following a dinner with Indonesian tourism industry representatives during his recent visit to the country.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Tiong emphasized the importance of enriching tourism product content to cater to various visitor segments. He highlighted the opportunity for Malaysia to position itself as a transit hub for European and other long-haul markets due to the recovery of regional tourism. The focus will be on developing MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) tourism and tapping into the medical and health tourism sectors.
Tiong also identified Indonesian students and senior citizens as potential visitor segments. Plans are in place to implement student exchange programs and develop senior-friendly tourism packages to increase visitor arrivals during off-peak seasons. Furthermore, educational tourism cooperation is being explored, aiming to strengthen networks between higher learning institutions and secondary schools in both countries.
Enhancing connectivity through expanded flight routes with Malaysia Airlines and other carriers is also being considered to boost regional and long-haul flight capacity. This expansion could attract more international visitors to use Malaysia as a transit destination.
Tourism Malaysia is committed to improving product development, market promotion, and resource sharing with Indonesia's tourism industry. Efforts will be coordinated with relevant agencies to facilitate collaboration in the education and aviation sectors. Tiong noted that the Indonesian market is large and promising, and maintaining close communication with local industry players will be crucial in developing targeted market strategies and product offerings. This collaboration is expected to support stable tourism growth leading up to Visit Malaysia Year 2026.
