Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia and the Maldives have joined forces in their call to end the genocide in Palestine, as emphasized by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. During a joint press conference with Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, Anwar lauded Muizzu's decision to prohibit Israeli passport holders from entering the Maldives, describing it as a courageous and principled stand against ongoing violence.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted Malaysia's historical stance of not recognizing Israel since its independence due to Israel's persistent refusal to respect human rights, honor international commitments, and cease genocidal acts in Palestine, particularly in Gaza. Anwar expressed Malaysia's shared sentiments and aspirations with the Maldives, extending high respect and accolades to Muizzu for his courageous and principled stance.
Muizzu, who is on a four-day official visit to Malaysia following an invitation from Anwar, was welcomed with an official ceremony at the Perdana Putra Complex. This visit marks Muizzu's first to Malaysia since he assumed the presidency in November 2023.
During the press conference, Muizzu reiterated the Maldives' firm support for Palestine's fight for independence, emphasizing the need for a sovereign state with East Jerusalem as its capital, based on the pre-1967 borders. He reaffirmed the Maldives' unwavering support for the Palestinian people's legitimate quest for statehood.
In a joint statement, Anwar and Muizzu also condemned terrorism in all its forms, reaffirming their commitment to rejecting terrorism and ensuring that perpetrators are brought to justice.
