Abu Dhabi:Malaysia is set to enhance its collaboration with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) by implementing more practical and result-oriented initiatives to combat the growing threat of transnational organized crime.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail discussed this during a meeting with the UNODC regional representative for Southeast Asia and the Pacific. The meeting took place on the final day of his working visit to the United Arab Emirates during the 15th United Nations Congress on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice.

During the discussions, both parties shared insights on the complex nature of transnational organized crime, particularly focusing on how criminal networks are exploiting digital technology to extend their operations across borders and jurisdictions. Saifuddin emphasized Malaysia's strategic location within ASEAN and its commitment to tackling these issues through integrated enforcement, prevention, and by cutting off illicit financial flows while enhancing regional and international cooperation.

The meeting also addressed the need to combat cyber-enabled organized crime, human and contraband trafficking, and the misuse of emerging technologies by criminal networks. Malaysia acknowledged the vital role of UNODC in supporting ASEAN countries through regional capacity building, information sharing, and the exchange of best practices.

Saifuddin highlighted that as cross-border threats continue to evolve, maintaining strong cooperation networks with regional and international partners is crucial to safeguarding Malaysia's security.
