Kuala lumpur: Malaysia has been working closely with ASEAN member countries to strengthen regional cooperation to ensure the safe, secure, and regulated use of nuclear technology in the region. Deputy Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal highlighted the efforts during the closing ceremony of the 12th Annual Meeting of ASEAN Network of Regulatory Bodies on Atomic Energy (ASEANTOM).

According to BERNAMA News Agency, various initiatives, including capacity-building programmes, technical exchanges, and strategic collaborations, have bolstered regional preparedness and resilience against emerging challenges. Mohammad Yusof expressed gratitude for the continued support and collaboration from ASEAN members, acknowledging their crucial role in these achievements.

Mohammad Yusof emphasized Malaysia's commitment as the Chair of ASEANTOM this year, pledging to contribute actively to the network's shared goals. He noted that this aligns with the official theme for Malaysia's ASEAN Chairmanship in 2025, "Inclusivity and Sustainability," aiming to ensure that no ASEAN citizen is left behind and that the region's progress benefits all.

He also underscored the importance of promoting development that safeguards the environment and ensures long-term prosperity, expressing hope that continued collaboration will lead to a safer, more innovative, and sustainable future for the region.

During the ceremony, Malaysia officially handed over the chairmanship of ASEANTOM to the Philippines, marking the end of its term. Dr Carlo Abundo Arcilla, director of the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute, affirmed the Philippines' commitment to working collaboratively with all member states, dialogue partners, and the ASEAN Secretariat to maintain safety and preparedness in facing nuclear and radioactive challenges.
