Malaysia Boosts Defence Self-Reliance with Weststar-RTI Collaboration

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia aims to strengthen its domestic defence technology capabilities to enhance its Sovereign Defence Capability and reduce reliance on foreign defence assets. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the strategic move is essential to enable Malaysia to become more self-reliant in meeting its defence requirements while contributing to regional security.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamed Khaled emphasized that achieving Sovereign Defence Capability allows Malaysia to meet its own defence needs without external dependence. He highlighted the importance of strengthening domestic defence capability to contribute more effectively to security and stability in Southeast Asia. His remarks came after witnessing the signing of a strategic cooperation agreement between Malaysia's Weststar Defence Industries Sdn Bhd and Australia's Rocket Technologies International (RTI).

Dignitaries present at the signing included Dewan Rakyat Speaker Tan Sri Johari Abdul, Malaysian High Commissioner to Australia Datin Paduka Sharrina Abdullah, and Royal Malaysian Air Force chief General Tan Sri Muhamad Norazlan Aris. Commenting on the partnership, Mohamed Khaled stated that the government welcomed the initiative, viewing it as a catalyst for accelerating the development of Malaysia's aerospace technology capabilities and strengthening the national defence industry.

He noted that the partnership would enable Malaysia, through Weststar, to develop its defence manufacturing capabilities while integrating into RTI's global supply chain. Mohamed Khaled remarked that Weststar Group's innovative approach aligns with the National Defence Strategy, enhancing Malaysia's preparedness for geopolitical tensions and asymmetrical warfare threats.

The strategic partnership also signifies the robust defence relations between Malaysia and Australia, following the release of the Australian National Defence Strategy 2026. The minister mentioned that the strategy, supported by the Integrated Investment Programme, underscores Australia's commitment to assisting partner nations in developing their defence capabilities.
