Malaysia Declines Extradition of Zakir Naik to India

Kuala Lumpur:Malaysia has decided not to extradite independent preacher Dr. Zakir Naik to India, as announced in the Dewan Rakyat today. The Home Ministry confirmed that no commitment has been made to proceed with the extradition.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the decision is based on Malaysia's rights under Article 6 of the Extradition Treaty signed with India in 2010, as well as the provisions of the Extradition Act 1992. The government has not received any new extradition requests from India to date.

An official request for Dr. Zakir Naik's extradition was initially received from the Indian government on January 19, 2018. Additionally, a diplomatic note for reconsideration was submitted on May 29, 2020. This information was provided by the ministry in response to a query from Datuk Dr. Ahmad Marzuk Shaary (PN-Pengkalan Chepa), who sought an update on India's extradition request for Zakir Naik.

Ahmad Marzuk also inquired whether the documents and evidence submitted by India met the requirements of the Extradition Act 1992 and the extradition treaty. Dr. Zakir Naik is currently wanted by Indian authorities in connection with several cases in his home country.
