Baku:The government is working on establishing a sovereign artificial intelligence (AI) cloud to protect the nation's classified information from foreign laws and policies, according to Communications Minister Datuk Seri Fahmi Fadzil. This initiative aims to secure sensitive government data, such as official documents, which may be at risk if stored on public cloud services.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously highlighted the importance of this project, which is now in the implementation phase. Fahmi emphasized the need for a sovereign AI cloud to maintain digital sovereignty, as some countries' policies could compromise the security of public clouds handling classified information.
This development was discussed during Fahmi's appearance on Bernama TV's Ruang Bicara program, focusing on 'Budget 2027 Empowering Communication, Driving the Orange Economy'. The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and the Communications Ministry will manage the AI cloud initiative.
Additionally, Fahmi highlighted the importance of expanding wider, faster, more affordable, and secure Internet access to bolster the digital economy, expected to contribute over 25.5% to the GDP. Phase One of the National Digital Network (JENDELA) has reduced the Internet access gap between urban and rural areas, although connectivity issues persist when users move beyond village areas.
He noted that improved Internet connectivity would assist entrepreneurs, students, and the public in accessing online services. Furthermore, with 5G technology, efficiency in agriculture could be enhanced through the use of the Internet of Things (IoT) and robotics.
Under Budget 2027, Malaysia has allocated RM5 billion to JENDELA to improve high-quality Internet coverage, focusing on rural and remote areas.
