Malaysia Engages in Bilateral Talks on Energy Technologies and Waste Management at APEC EMM15

Busan: Malaysia had fruitful bilateral engagements with several APEC members on the sidelines of the 15th APEC Energy Ministerial Meeting (EMM), exchanging information and exploring future collaboration in various energy areas.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said discussions were held with New Zealand, which shared its expertise in geothermal energy and expressed interest in liquefied natural gas (LNG) regasification. Meetings with industry players from the United States and South Korea offered expertise and technology in nuclear energy, showing willingness to work and support Malaysia.

Fadillah emphasized the importance of identifying the best technologies suitable for Malaysia, not only in terms of technology but also in developing human capital, expertise, and financing perspectives. He highlighted Malaysia's openness to collaboration with all APEC countries.

During his official working visit in Busan until August 29 in conjunction with the 15th EMM, Fadillah, who is also the Minister of Energy Transition and Water Transformation, discussed nuclear energy and waste management. He raised concerns about whether technology providers are willing to take back the waste while supplying technology, noting that waste management is a significant concern for smaller countries like Malaysia.

Malaysia also engaged in bilateral meetings with Hong Kong, China Secretary of Energy Chin Wan Tse; Brunei Minister at the Prime Minister's Office, Major General (Retired) Dato Paduka Seri Halbi Mohammad Yussof; and South Korea Minister of Trade, Industry and Economy Jung-Kwan Kim. The discussions covered various issues, including cooperation in energy and hydrogen technology, nuclear power development for electricity generation, enhancing regional interconnections under the ASEAN Power Grid, waste-to-energy, and energy efficiency initiatives.
