Kuala lumpur: MyPOWER Corporation Malaysia is spearheading a comprehensive assessment of the country's potential nuclear energy programme. This initiative encompasses policy development, legal and regulatory frameworks, project feasibility, industry participation, stakeholder engagement, and human capital development.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof emphasized that the exploration of nuclear energy for electricity generation is a strategic move aimed at bolstering long-term energy security while facilitating Malaysia's clean energy transition. This initiative aligns with the Thirteenth Malaysia Plan (13MP) presented by Anwar Ibrahim on July 31, 2025. Fadillah highlighted the growing relevance of evaluating nuclear energy feasibility in light of a global energy landscape marked by geopolitical uncertainties and fluctuations in fuel supply and prices.
MyPOWER, an agency under the Ministry of Energy Transition and Water Transformation (PETRA), has been designated as the Nuclear Energy Programme Implementing Organisation (NEPIO). The agency is tasked with coordinating preparations following the phased approach recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
Fadillah also noted that global tensions, particularly in the Middle East, and disruptions to key energy routes like the Strait of Hormuz, have significantly impacted energy markets and supply stability. He asserted that nuclear energy offers stable, low-carbon baseload power, which can reduce dependence on fossil fuels.
Furthermore, several ASEAN countries are revisiting nuclear energy to diversify their energy strategies. The Philippines aims for up to 4,800 megawatts of nuclear capacity by 2050, while Vietnam has reintroduced nuclear power into its national energy plan. Indonesia is exploring small modular reactors (SMRs), including floating reactors, with a target timeline around 2030.
Fadillah underscored that Malaysia's focus is on ensuring any future nuclear development undergoes thorough evaluation through comprehensive technical analysis, aligning with national priorities and international obligations. This approach, he stated, is in line with the MADANI Malaysia vision, which prioritizes sustainable, knowledge-driven development for the well-being of present and future generations.
