Malaysia Helicopter Crash Claims Lives of Five Medical Personnel

Miri: Five people were killed when a helicopter crashed at a remote airfield inland in Sarawak on the northwest coast of the island of Borneo, Malaysian authorities have said. According to TRTworld.com, the BO-105 helicopter operated by the country's Flying Doctor Service went down on Tuesday afternoon about 315 kilometers southeast of the city of Miri, disaster management officials reported on Wednesday. "All five on board are deceased, as confirmed by reports from the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba) and the Ministry of Health," stated Galong Luang, Miri's disaster management chairman, in a statement. The crash claimed the lives of the pilot, a doctor, a medical assistant, and two nurses, as confirmed by local media. Footage circulating on social media captured the harrowing moments before the crash, showing the helicopter emitting smoke. A Malaysian air crash investigation team is expected to reach the crash site on Wednesday, the Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia announced. The cause of the cras h remains unclear at this stage. Malaysia's Flying Doctor Service plays a crucial role in providing medical assistance to indigenous communities, who rely heavily on air transport due to the dense jungles and challenging terrain in the country's interior regions. Medical teams, typically comprising a medical officer, assistant medical officer, nurses, and other health staff, travel by helicopter or small aircraft on scheduled monthly or bi-monthly rotations to remote villages and longhouses.
