Jakarta:National defender Muhammad Syahmi Safari is drawing inspiration from Malaysia's memorable win over Indonesia at Gelora Bung Karno Stadium in 2019 as the team prepares for their second Group A match in the 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Syahmi, who was part of the squad during the 2019 victory, believes the experience can boost the team's confidence, although he acknowledges that both teams have evolved. Despite not playing in the previous match, the defender vividly recalls the intense atmosphere and is optimistic about the upcoming game.

Only Syahmi and fellow defender La'Vere Corbin-Ong remain from the 2019 squad. In that match, Malaysia staged a dramatic comeback, winning 3-2, with Mohamadou Sumareh scoring twice and Muhammad Syafiq Ahmad adding another goal. The victory, however, was marred by tensions as Malaysian supporters faced hostility from local fans, leading to security measures for the players and officials.

Syahmi is confident that the current squad can handle the pressure of playing at a packed GBK Stadium. He emphasized the players' readiness and experience, expressing his determination to contribute positively if given the chance.

Following their match against Indonesia, Malaysia will face Singapore in Bandung as they continue their campaign, having already secured a 3-0 victory over Bangladesh.
