Suwon: Malaysia continues to move forward in enhancing its road management by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) technology, thus increasing the efficiency, safety, and effectiveness of road and infrastructure management. Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi stated that Malaysia is not just observing but actively implementing AI technology in road management.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Nanta emphasized the integration of smart monitoring technologies such as drones, sensors, and the Internet of Things (IoT) to enable real-time detection of road damage. AI plays a crucial role in analyzing this data to pinpoint locations requiring immediate attention and to predict potential future damage. Nanta conveyed these insights during his presentation on 'Malaysia's Future-Ready, Hyper-Connected Cities: Policies, Progress and the Path Ahead' at the 2025 Intelligent Transport Systems (ITS) Asia Pacific Forum held in Suwon, South Korea.
Nanta also highlighted the strategic vision of the Ministry of Works through the Malaysian ITS Roadmap 2030, aimed at fostering safer, more connected, and sustainable national mobility. The roadmap serves as a fundamental guide for transforming the country's ITS landscape. He elaborated on the five core policy pillars underpinning the plan: hyperconnected transportation via seamless smart mobility, advancing green and sustainable mobility, enhancing public services through transportation digitalization, ensuring a safe and secure transport ecosystem, and utilizing data for mobility and transportation planning.
He stressed that these plans are actionable, with Malaysia poised to innovate, invest, and collaborate to build a hyperconnected nation. Nanta noted significant developments in Malaysia's ITS landscape, including advancements in autonomous vehicles, the adoption of electric vehicles in public transport, the introduction of the Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system, and the establishment of the National Intelligent Traffic Management Centre (NITMC).
These transformation initiatives reflect Malaysia's robust commitment to constructing a safer, more efficient, and sustainable transport ecosystem, aligning with the broader vision of creating hyperconnected cities.
