Malaysia-Indonesia Land Boundary Discussions Ongoing Amidst Speculations

Kuala lumpur:<Text>

The land boundary between Malaysia and Indonesia remains under negotiation, as confirmed by Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. He stated that the discussions are being conducted in accordance with legal provisions, and no final decision has been reached yet.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamad emphasized that the negotiations are still ongoing due to discrepancies between map representations and actual ground conditions. He mentioned that while technical committees and surveyors will continue their work, the ultimate resolution will depend on the leaders of both countries reaching an agreement and understanding.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had previously refuted media reports suggesting that Malaysia had ceded 5,207 hectares of land to Indonesia as compensation for three villages in the Nunukan area near the Sabah-Kalimantan border. Anwar asserted that Malaysia plans to hold amicable negotiations concerning land c ompensation.

Recent media reports highlighted that three villages in Nunukan, North Kalimantan, were reportedly included in Malaysia, with the boundary dispute in the Pulau Sebatik area still unresolved. Additionally, Indonesia was reported to have gained an additional 5,207 hectares from Malaysia. However, Minister of Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability Datuk Seri Arthur Joseph Kurup clarified that negotiations for demarcation and measurement in Outstanding Boundary Problem areas are being conducted harmoniously between the two countries, without reliance on reciprocity, compensation, or gains and losses.

The finalisation of the land boundary measurements is anticipated to be formalized through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding between the two countries on February 18, 2025, following over 45 years of comprehensive and transparent technical negotiations.
