Malaysia Not A Hamas Base, Says IGP After US Analyst’s Remark

Kuala lumpur: The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) today denied claims by former US Department of Treasury terrorism finance analyst Jonathan Schanzer that Malaysia was serving as a hub for Hamas operations. Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail stated that while the Palestinian struggle resonates deeply with Muslims in Malaysia, the country continues to maintain amicable relations with the United States and other nations.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohd Khalid clarified that the presence of foreign nationals, particularly from Palestine and Syria, in Malaysian educational institutions possibly led to misinterpretations by certain parties regarding Malaysia's stance. He emphasized that these individuals are primarily students, and the local community's empathy for their situation might have been misconstrued.

Jonathan Schanzer had previously alleged through his social media account that Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim lacked interest in fostering peace between Palestine and Israel. However, Mohd Khalid reiterated that PDRM consistently collaborates with international counterparts to ensure national security and enhance preventive measures.

Regarding the nation's security protocols, especially at border areas, Mohd Khalid assured that they are maintained at an optimal level. This is achieved through the concerted efforts of various government agencies, including the Immigration Department, Customs Department, and the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency. He highlighted the importance of ongoing communication and joint actions in addressing border security challenges.
