Malaysia Poised to Lead ASEAN Cyber Security Diplomacy, Say Experts

Kuching: Malaysia, as the ASEAN chair, has the potential to spearhead the development of cyber security diplomacy within the region, according to academicians.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr. Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin, a fellow at the Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) Centre For Media And Information Warfare Studies, emphasized that cyber security diplomacy could bridge the digital literacy gap among ASEAN countries and bolster enforcement against regional cyber crime. He suggested that ASEAN could leverage Malaysia's experience to establish a platform similar to Interpol for addressing cyber security abuses through diplomatic means.

Dr. Noor further highlighted that while the European Union countries are advancing with robust legal frameworks, ASEAN should also focus on fostering a secure internet network ecosystem. This could enhance cross-border cyber security diplomacy, crucial for countering radical and subversive threats. He noted that such initiatives would enhance Malaysia's standing in regional cyber security.

Dr. Mohsen Mohamad Hata, a senior lecturer at UiTM's Computing, Informatics and Mathematics College, highlighted the importance of online safety as a communication and information access platform. He stressed the need for heightened awareness of user etiquette and platform provider responsibilities to preempt threats before they escalate into attacks. Dr. Mohsen pointed out that government initiatives, including drafting and amending Acts related to online safety, indicate Malaysia's committed efforts to bolster online safety.

Siraj Jalil from the Malaysian Cyber Consumers Association (MCCA) advocated for integrating digital literacy into the national education system. He suggested that students could play a crucial role as sub-agents by educating family members about digital technology. Siraj also emphasized that legal amendments would be ineffective without consumer understanding, underscoring the importance of digital literacy education to support legal reforms.

Today marks Internet Security Day, observed on the second day of the second week of February, celebrated in over 200 countries. Malaysia's theme for this year is "Kepercayaan Digital: Membina Komuniti Berdaya Tahan."
