Kuala lumpur: Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin has announced Malaysia's readiness to deploy a battalion of the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) to Gaza if selected by the United Nations (UN) for a peacekeeping mission in the region. The MAF battalion has been registered for this purpose, and Malaysia is now waiting for the UN Security Council's decision on deploying peacekeepers to the conflict-affected area.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Mohamed Khaled stated that Malaysia had expressed its readiness and intention to assist during a meeting of defence ministers from countries contributing to peacekeeping forces. The minister noted that Malaysia is prepared with one battalion if chosen by the UN Security Council.
The Defence Minister clarified that the battalion intended for the Gaza mission would be separate from the Malaysian contingent currently stationed in Lebanon. The Lebanon contingent undergoes a regular rotation, allowing other battalions to remain on standby for potential missions.
Mohamed Khaled also highlighted that the cost of deploying the Malaysian peacekeeping force is not a primary concern at this stage. The focus is on Malaysia's commitment to aiding the Palestinian people, who have been enduring prolonged conflict.
He reiterated Malaysia's dedication to global peace efforts and its unwavering support for universal humanitarian principles, which underpin the country's advocacy for the Palestinian cause.
