Kuala lumpur: Malaysia reaffirmed its steadfast commitment to strengthening cultural relations, deepening a shared regional identity, and supporting the ASEAN vision of a culturally confident, inclusive, and innovative community. Deputy Minister of Tourism, Arts and Culture Datuk Khairul Firdaus Akbar Khan stated this commitment aligns with the Malaysia MADANI values of compassion, respect, and shared prosperity, and is being advanced through several cultural projects.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Khairul Firdaus expressed that the commitment is expected to impact all Member States by empowering creative industries and securing fair, reliable livelihoods for talented artisans and creative entrepreneurs. He made these remarks during his speech at the launch of the 21st Senior Officials' Meeting on Culture and Arts (SOMCA) and related meetings.
Khairul Firdaus highlighted the role of culture in international relations, noting its transformation from state-to-state exchanges to a more people-centered approach. He stressed the importance of greater connectivity for forging deeper human connections and promoting rich cultural diversity. Connectivity, through digital platforms, cultural tourism, or collaborative arts projects, was emphasized as a crucial tool for fostering mutual understanding and strengthening the social fabric between nations.
He underscored the collective responsibility to translate aspirations into tangible regional initiatives that provide immediate benefits to people. He acknowledged the support from ASEAN Plus Three countries, expressing appreciation for the presence of colleagues from China, Japan, and South Korea at the meeting. The partnerships with these Dialogue Partners were valued for their contribution to culture and arts.
Khairul Firdaus explained that Plus Three cooperation allowed the region to focus on its shared mandate of using culture and arts to cultivate peace, tolerance, and mutual understanding. This goal is being pursued through regional initiatives such as the ASEAN Festival of Arts, the ASEAN City of Culture, and the Best of ASEAN Performing Arts.
