Beijing: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed confidence that Malaysia's relations with China will continue on an upward trajectory. The Prime Minister said Malaysia values its strong ties with China, reaffirming the country's commitment to deepening bilateral relations.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar emphasized the importance of implementing previously agreed-upon initiatives promptly to ensure the effectiveness of the special strategic, comprehensive relations between the two nations. He made these remarks during a courtesy call on Chinese President Xi Jinping at the Great Hall of the People.
Also present during the meeting was Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan. The Prime Minister extended his gratitude to President Xi for the invitation to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Plus Summit in Tianjin, stating, "For me personally, of course, it is a great honour to be given the opportunity to participate in the deliberations of the SCO, which is important to us."
In addition to meeting with President Xi, Anwar held a bilateral meeting with Premier Li Qiang, who later hosted a dinner for him at the Diaoyutai State Guesthouse.
Malaysia and China have shared diplomatic relations since May 31, 1974. In 2013, these ties were elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which continues to strengthen across various sectors, including politics, trade, education, social, and cultural areas. China has maintained its position as Malaysia's largest trading partner for 16 years, beginning in 2009. The total trade between the two countries is valued at RM484.12 billion in 2024, which accounts for 16.8 percent of Malaysia's total global trade, amounting to RM2.879 trillion.
