Malaysia Reaffirms Support for Thailand-Cambodia Border Peace Efforts

Kuala lumpur: Malaysia remains committed to supporting Thailand and Cambodia in their efforts to strengthen peace and stability along their border, in line with the spirit of mutual understanding and regional cooperation under the ASEAN framework. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin affirmed this in his official Instagram post after chairing the 2nd Special General Border Committee (GBC) Meeting between Thailand and Cambodia at Wisma Perwira ATM here on Thursday.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Thai Defence Minister Natthaphon Narkphanit and Cambodian National Defence Minister Tea Seiha led their respective delegations to the meeting. Malaysia hopes that the agreement reached at the meeting, as well as the ongoing peace process, will continue to be respected to ensure lasting peace along the border areas. Khaled expressed pride in hosting and fostering close relations with Thailand and Cambodia, reflecting Malaysia's active role in promoting peace and stability across the ASEAN region.

The two neighbours had previously held the first GBC in Koh Kong Province, Cambodia, on September 10. Earlier, it was reported that Thailand and Cambodia had agreed to expedite efforts to demarcate their shared land boundary, following a two-day Special Meeting of the Joint Commission on Demarcation for Land Boundary (JBC) held in Chanthaburi, the eastern province of Thailand, from October 21 to 22.

Thailand and Cambodia are working towards lasting peace along their 817-kilometre border, which has long been a source of disputes. Tensions between the two countries escalated into a military confrontation in the Oddar Meanchey and Preah Vihear border areas on July 24, before both sides agreed to a ceasefire following Malaysia's mediation efforts in Putrajaya on July 28.
