Malaysia Seeks Collaboration Beyond ASEAN, Eyes Maldives Partnership

Kuala Lumpur: Malaysia is intensifying efforts to strengthen collaboration within ASEAN and with neighbouring nations such as the Maldives, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized the importance of extending engagement beyond the region to friendly countries that share common goals for development and prosperity.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Anwar highlighted the significance of the Maldives as a partner due to the longstanding people-to-people ties and the potential for expanded collaboration in areas such as trade, investment, digital innovation, and environmental sustainability. He made these remarks during his keynote address at the Maldives-Malaysia Business Forum 2025, where Maldives President Dr Mohamed Muizzu was also present. This visit marked Muizzu's first official trip to Malaysia since assuming the presidency in November 2023, at Anwar's invitation.

Anwar noted the historical friendship between Malaysia and the Maldives, pointing out the shared familiarity in policies, political systems, and strong bilateral ties. He expressed optimism regarding the current government leadership in the Maldives, which demonstrates determination and clarity in its policies to advance the country.

Earlier in the event, Anwar and Muizzu witnessed the exchange of three memoranda of understanding and two exchanges of notes across various sectors to enhance cooperation for mutual benefit. In 2024, Malaysia's total trade with the Maldives increased by 4.3 percent to US$189 million (RM862.7 million) from US$180.9 million (RM827.3 million) in 2023, positioning the Maldives as Malaysia's sixth-largest trading partner among South Asian countries.
