Malaysia-Thailand Border Economic Zone and Strait of Hormuz Crisis Highlighted in Dewan Rakyat

Kuala lumpur: The development of the Malaysia-Thailand Border Economic Zone (BEZ) and the ongoing crisis in the Strait of Hormuz are set to be central topics at today's Dewan Rakyat session.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Order Paper on the Parliament portal reveals that Datuk Adnan Abu Hassan (BN-Kuala Pilah) will query the Prime Minister regarding the anticipated economic benefits for Malaysia from the Malaysia-Thailand BEZ initiative. He seeks clarification on strategies to ensure these benefits reach small businesses and local communities in the border regions, a topic scheduled for the Ministers' Question Time starting at 10 am.

Further inquiries during the session will include Datuk Rosol Wahid (PN-Hulu Terengganu) asking the Prime Minister for the government's evaluation of the prolonged Strait of Hormuz crisis and its repercussions on Malaysia's political and economic stability. He will also seek information on the measures being implemented to counteract its adverse effects.

The session will also address a question from Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS-Tanjong Manis) to the Transport Minister regarding initiatives to combat illegal highway racing, prompted by a recent incident in Simpang Renggam, Johor, on June 1.

Following these discussions, the Dewan Rakyat will move to the first reading of two Bills: the Statistics Bill 2026 presented by the Economy Minister and the National Trust Fund Bill 2026 by the Finance Minister.

Subsequently, Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform), will present the report of the Parliamentary Special Select Committee on Constitutional Amendments. These amendments pertain to the separation of roles between the Attorney General and the Public Prosecutor. Azalina noted in a statement yesterday that the committee has refined the original amendment proposal through seven critical improvements aimed at bolstering the independence, integrity, and accountability of the Public Prosecutor's institution.

The ongoing Dewan Rakyat meeting is scheduled to continue for 16 days, from June 22 to Thursday.
