Kuala lumpur: Malaysia will ensure that ASEAN will be stronger and move in step or in tandem for global stability, prosperity, and peace, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. He emphasized Malaysia's commitment to driving key initiatives such as the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), expediting the ASEAN Power Grid, and finalizing the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement to secure an open, fair, and sustainable economic future for the 660 million people in the region.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the Prime Minister highlighted that ASEAN will continue to assert itself, ensure harmony, and lead with determination, rather than merely follow the global order. Anwar noted the current challenges faced by the world, including great power tensions, a gruelling geo-economic race, and the collapse of multilateralism. In this context, he stressed that ASEAN must unite to bolster its role and ensure that the region's voice remains respected.
Anwar cited Malaysia's efforts as the 2025 ASEAN Chairman in reconciling Cambodia and Thailand, two neighbouring countries on the brink of a more serious conflict. With the involvement of China and the United States, an agreement on an immediate and unconditional ceasefire was achieved. This, he said, underscores the importance of diplomacy in promoting peace and solid leadership.
During his working visit to Indonesia, Anwar made his first appearance at the ASEAN Secretariat Building in Jakarta, underscoring Malaysia's significant role as ASEAN Chairman this year. He remarked that his visit symbolizes Malaysia's unwavering commitment to the ideals and spirit of ASEAN.
